Summer 2021 second half preview

With the Summer 2021 regular season of Maui Adult Baseball League action at it’s halfway point, just 1 win separates three teams vying for the league’s top record, as well as the three teams battling for the final playoff spot. In addition to the tight races to follow as the second half of the season commences this weekend, a number of significant statistical feats stand out during the 26th season of the MABL:

  • A season after a combined 18 home runs were hit by 14 different players, an unprecedented 10 home runs have been hit through the first 7 weeks of games.
  • The Central Rays’ Edison Sakata starts the second half of the season riding an 18-game hitting streak; only two players have hit safely for more consecutive games in MABL history and it is the longest such streak since MABL fan-favorite Brendan Gripp accomplished the feat in 2016.
  • On September 19 Jeff Tucker of the West Maui Brewers played in his 100th consecutive game to start his MABL career, the second longest streak in league history behind teammate “Iron Mike” Gerrity‘s 130 games (which is active as well).
  • Through 7 weeks, the Lahaina Warriors’ Mike Gilligan has racked up 51 strikeouts — including three games of 10 strikeouts or more. Gilligan is currently on pace to smash the MABL single season strike out record of 82 set by Joe Stover during the Summer 2014 season.

The Makena Royals lead the way with 6 wins at the halfway point. Coming off a 12-win season where they fell just short of a 2nd consecutive MABL Championship title, Lance Fujii‘s squad features the league’s top offense (.355/.466/.473 AVG/OBP/SLG) and pitching staff (2.67 ERA, 1.33 WHIP), and has been getting contributions up and down the lineup thus far. In his second season, Chazz Ishikawa leads the league in RBIs (10) and hits (12) and joins veterans Barry Takahashi and Lance Ribucan as Royals hitting at least .400.

The Central Rays are currently tied for 2nd with a 5-2 record. Two-time league MVP Jeremy Loque is threatening to win a 2nd triple crown as he leads the league with an astonishing .556 average to go along with 1 HR and 6 RBIs. Garrett Yamada (.500/.583/.700, 11 R, 7 RBI) and Bryant Sparkman (.423/.444/.500) are also helping pace the offense, while rookie southpaw Chris Mullins (1-1, 4.50 ERA, 19 K, 20.0 IP) has thrown the bulk of the innings for the Rays.

After back to back seasons of 4 wins, the Kihei Centipedes reached that mark in their first 4 games of the Summer 2021 season, and currently sit at 5-2 as well. The ‘Pedes offense has been second to only the Royals, with speedsters Samuel Crouch (.429 AVG and 9 SB) and Josh Hansen (.500 AVG and 5 SB) and last season’s MVP runner up, Ryan Swindle (.348/.483/.696, 5 XBH, 9 R), leading the way. Swindle and Kanale Kahalekai have led the pitching staff, with Kahalekai leading the league with 3 wins.

Coming off their second MABL Championship in the last 3 seasons, the La Perouse Pirates reach the season’s halfway point with a 4-3 record. Three-time Cy Young award winner Joe McFarlin (2-0, league best 0.57 ERA, 23 K, 15.2 IP) is having another tremendous season on the mound and three different Pirates have gone deep. Manager and original MABL member Mike Marcotte leads the team with a .381 average.

The West Maui Brewers’ 3-4 record includes three 1-run losses (including extra-innings losses to both the Royals and Pirates), and their pitching staff, led by workhorse Andy Michaels (4.73 ERA, .244 OBA, 32.1 IP) has the league’s second best ERA (3.92) and WHIP (1.45). Michaels recently became the first member of the league to pitch in 200 games, and his 55 career wins are closing in on Fausto Allosada‘s 59 for the all-time best mark. Second year shortstop Brandon Kagrise (.435/.567/.478, 8 R, 8 RBI) and veterans Jeff Tucker (.400/.438/.667, 12 H, 9 RBI) and Mike Abercrombie (.400/.419/.567, 12 H, 11 R) lead the Brewers’ offense.

The Pacific Hurricanes currently control the final playoff spot, and picked up a nice win over the defending champs on Aug 29. Center fielder Andrew Nakihei has been setting the table for the ‘Canes offense (.375/.500/.500, 6 R, 3 SB) out of the leadoff spot, and veteran Dreyson Cordova leads the pitching staff with a league best .158 opponent’s average and 12 Ks over 16.0 innings.

Following an 8-win Spring season, the Upcountry Dirtbags hope to make some noise in the second half of Summer 2021 after starting 1-5. Through the first half of the season Aaron Goddard leads the team with a .429 batting average and 5 RBIs. Three-time MABL Manager of the Year Rich Doster is going to have to work some magic, but if history is any indication, anything can happen if the ‘Bags can fight their way into the playoffs.

Led by first year manager Mike Gilligan, the Lahaina Warriors pulled off a nice win against the Brewers to close the first half of the season. Gilligan’s pitching (4.46 ERA, 51 K, 2 CG, 38.1 IP) and veteran backstop Steve Mearriam‘s stick (.444/.524/.444) lead the way for the Warriors as they enter the second half just a game back of the final playoff spot.
