The single-elimination 1st Round of the Maui Adult Baseball League playoffs took place on May 15 at Maehara Stadium with games between the Lahaina Warriors (6th seed, 6-8) and La Perouse Pirates (3rd seed, 10-4), and the West Maui Brewers (5th seed, 6-8) and the Central Rays (4th seed, 8-6).
In the morning contest, the Warriors defeated the Pirates by a final of 7-2, with former Major Leaguer John Lamb going the distance and racking up a whopping 21 strikeouts en route to his first career MABL win. The 21 strikeouts sets a new MABL record over 9 innings, topping the previous mark of 19 set by Randy Button (see below). Lamb was one of four Warriors with 2 hits, while Elias Steadman went 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles for the Pirates in the losing effort. The marks the first playoff win for the Warriors since they defeated the Makena Royals on May 19, 2019. The Warriors now advance to face the Royals, who earned a first round bye this season after going 11-3 during the regular season. That series is set to kick-off at 3:00pm this Sunday, at Maehara Stadium.
The Rays have also advanced, after beating the Brewers by a final of 4-1. Bryant Sparkman threw a gem for the Rays, scattering 4 hits over 8 innings, and picking up the 53th win of his MABL career. The veteran righty allowed only 1 run, and struck out 8 without allowing a walk. Sparkman and Garrett Yamada led the offensive charge for the Rays, picking up 2 hits a piece and driving in 3 of the Rays’ 4 runs. The Rays will face the Upcountry Dirtbags in the 2nd Round of the playoffs with Game 1 of that series set for noon on Sunday.
