MABL finishes 1, 2 on Oahu

Teams representing the MABL went a perfect 4-0 against Oahu teams during the third annual Interisland Tournament on Oahu last weekend. In the tournament’s championship game, the All-MABL team, comprised of players from the Brewers, Dirtbags, Tigers, and Warriors, defeated the Centipedes, who were also carrying players from the Pirates (and Roy), to take home the tournament title for the second consecutive year.

Game 1: All-MABL (8) vs HBL Open Division All-Star Team (3)

After allowing the first two batters of the game to reach base and score, John Lamb settled in and mowed through the HBL lineup in the tournament’s opening game at Ala Wai Community Park in Waikiki. Lamb finished the game with 14 strikeouts, allowing only 1 more run over 9 innings. The Maui offense was initially kept off balance by HBL starting pitcher, Taichi Fujinaga (1 earned run on 5 hits and 1 walk over 6.0 innings of work), but broke through off relief arms, including a 5-run 8th inning that carried the All-MABL team to victory. Lamb and Jimmy Perez each drove in a pair of runs, while the MABL defense played flawlessly, committing no errors in the opening game. | Boxscore

Game 2: Kihei Centipedes (15) vs HBL D2 All-Star Team (6)

The Centipedes opened their weekend at Goeas Field in Koko Head District Park. For the second time in two Oahu trips, the ‘Pedes faced former Philadelphia Phillies farmhand Juan Colmenarez in their opening game. Colmenarez left with a lead after 5 innings (1 run on 3 hits and 1 base on balls over 5.0 innings, striking out 6), but the Centipedes broke through with 4 run innings in the 6th and 7th, and 6 runs in the top of the 9th. Chad Blackwell (2 for 3, 4 RBI), Damian Rodriguez (1 for 2, 3 RBI), and Mat Peterson (2 for 3, 2 RBI) drove in multiple runs, and four different pitchers combined in the winning effort with Dylan Lewis earning the win in his Centipedes return. | Boxscore

Game 3: HBL Open Division All-Star Team (2) vs Kihei Centipedes (9)

Following their first game, the Centipedes traveled to Ala Wai to face the HBL Open Division All-Star team, with Mike Gilligan getting the start. Gilligan limited Oahu to 2 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 8 in a complete game victory. The Centipedes scored 5 in the second inning and never looked back, winning easily while putting up 9 runs on 15 hits. Ryan Swindle, Luke Boyle, and Dylan Lewis all recorded multi-hit, multi-RBI games for the ‘Pedes. | Boxscore

John Lamb, Dreyson Cordova, and Trevor Caughey combined to go 3-0 over the tournament, striking out 28 and allowing only 8 earned runs over 26 innings.

Game 4: HBL D2 All-Star Team (9) vs All-MABL (11)

The All-MABL team had their hands full in their afternoon match-up with the HBL D2 team at Goeas Field. Defensive miscues helped the Oahu team build a 8-3 lead in the 6th inning. MABL rookie PJ Rochon drove in 2 on a 2 out double to cap a 4-run bottom of the 6th, and 4 more runs in the 7th gave the All-MABL team the 11-9 lead that would hold up. Dreyson Cordova went the distance, striking out 10 while earning the complete game victory. | Boxscore

Game 5: All-MABL (11) vs Kihei Centipedes (5)

Tournament championship game pitted the All-MABL team as the 2-seed (2-0, +7 run differential) against the Centipedes (2-0, +16 run differential) at Hans L’Orange Neighborhood Park in Waipahu on Sunday afternoon. The All-MABL team broke the game open with a 7-run 5th inning highlighted by John Lamb’s bases clearing double. All 11 batters in the All-MABL lineup contributed hits, and southpaw Trevor Caughey limited the Centipedes offense to 3 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk over 8 innings. | Boxscore


Hans L’Orange Neighborhood Park, home of Hawaii Pacific University’s division II baseball team and former home of the North Shore Honu and the West Oahu CaneFires of the defunct Hawaii Winter League.
