Oct 2019 Player of the Month

As the Summer 2019 regular season winds down, postseason races have been heating up. The candidates for the October 2019 MABL Player of the Month award have helped shape the playoff picture with huge performances over the past four weeks of the season. Read about their performances below, and cast your vote for the final POTM race of the season. Voting is open to players, fans, and family members, and, as always, is limited to 1 vote per individual.

The Player of the Month award this month is presented by Down the Hatch, located in the open-air courtyard of The Wharf in Lahaina across from the Banyan Tree. Open daily from 7:30am to 2am, Down the Hatch serves Breakfast, Lunch, Happy Hour, Dinner, and Late Night options offering the best seafood around – featuring locally sourced Fresh Fish, a flair of Southern Aloha with their Chicken & Waffles and Shrimp Po’ Boy, as well as a variety of Hawaiian Island favorites. The bar offers the longest Happy Hour on Maui (2pm-6pm daily) with a great selection of handcrafted cocktails and local beers. Michael Barrera of the Makena Royals tore it up at the plate in October. Over 3 games, Barrera was tied for the league lead with 10 hits and a .714 average, racking up 6 RBIs and an impressive .714/.733/.786 AVG/OBP/SLG line over that span. In the Royals Oct 27 victory over the Warriors, Barrera went 5 for 6 with 4 RBIs.

Al Haar of the Pacific Hurricanes continued his impressive rookie campaign by hitting .625 (10 for 16) over 4 games in October. The Hurricanes’ shortstop drove in 3 over that span, posting a .625/.647/.688 AVG/OBP/SLG line to go along with 3 runs scored. Against the Brewers on Oct 13, Haar was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate.

The Lahaina Warriors’ Matt Newsome had a tremendous month of October, hitting .563 (9 for 16) over 4 games. Newsome hit two doubles and scored 4 runs while drawing 4 walks over than span. Against the Hurricanes on Oct 20, Matt went 4 for 5 with an RBI in a losing effort.

Bryant Sparkman of the Central Rays continued his return to dominance on the mound by posting a 0.00 ERA over 12.0 IP in October. The Rays’ righty went 2-0 with a .217 opponents average and 11 strikeouts. At the plate, Sparkman hit .429 (6 for 14) over 3 games, including going 2 for 4 with a walk, RBI, and 2 runs scored in the Rays Oct 27 victory over the Pirates.

The West Maui Brewers’ Enmanuel Yajure kept up his remarkable production, going 3-0 with a 0.53 ERA and batting .500 (8 for 16) in October. On the mound, Yajure struck out 20 batters over 17.0 IP, allowing only 6 hits and 4 walks during 3 appearances. At the plate, he lead the league with 3 extra-base hits and 6 runs scored. Against the Pirates on Oct 20, Yajure picked up the complete game victory, fanning 13 batters and taking a no-hitter into the 7th inning.
