The Pirates’ Mike Gilligan finished second in MVP voting.
Mike Gilligan was second to no one in the Cy Young race this season. The Pirates southpaw went 6-2 with a 2.01 ERA over 58.1 innings, striking out 49 batters over that span. In addition to wins and innings pitched, Gilligan led the MABL in games started (9), opponents batting average (.155), and WHIP (0.81), and helped the Pirates reach the Championship Series for the first time since the 2021 Spring season. John Lamb finished as the runner-up in Cy Young award voting.
The Centipedes’ Davin Lewis was named MABL Rookie of the Year after batting .462 (18 for 39) with 12 runs scored, 11 RBIs, and 5 extra base hits in his first season. Damian Polinsky, from the Tigers, was runner up in ROY voting.
Mike Gilligan and Daniel Morris received the Manager of the Year award after leading the Pirates to a first place finish during the regular season with a 10-4 record, followed by a trip to the Championship Series.
John Schnettgoecke of the Pirates was awarded his second Gold Glove award for his defensive mastery of the catcher position. Centipedes’ shortstop Chad Blackwell finished second in Gold Glove voting.
The Gorillas’ Ekolu Watanabe earned Most Improved Player honors after a season in which he received MVP award votes for his performance on the plate for the Gorillas. Watanabe hit .432 (19 for 44) with 10 runs scored, 12 RBIs, and a home run this season. The Warriors’ Ian Delorme finished second in Most Improved Player voting.
Ken Henry of the Dirtbags was recognized by members of the league as this season’s Ken Talbot award recipient. Honoring the memory of one of the league’s past players, this award is given to the member of the MABL who best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship, community involvement, and positive contributions towards others, on and off the field. While he was nominated “for feeding the league”, anyone who has had the pleasure of sharing the field with Ken knows his contributions to the MABL go far beyond the grill!
Congratulations to all award winners and nominees on tremendous seasons, and mahalo to everyone who voted as part of the recognition process! Check out the awards page to view past end-of-season award winners.
