The first month of the Summer 2018 Maui Adult Baseball League season is in the books, and voting for the August Player of the Month is now open. This month’s candidates were selected based upon their performances during the first 3 weeks of the season. Voting is open to players, fans, and family members, and is limited to 1 vote per individual.
The Player of the Month award this month is presented by Betty’s Beach Cafe, located at 505 Front Street in Lahaina. The Upcountry Dirtbags’ Logan Kanamu started the season on a tear, leading the league with 8 hits, a .667 batting average, and a .692 on-base percentage through 3 games. In a walk-off victory against the Rays on August 12, Kanamu went 4 for 5 with 4 RBIs, including the game winner in the bottom of the ninth.
Timothy Lyons of the West Maui Brewers has made a big impact with his new team, batting .636 (7 for 11) with 2 doubles, 6 runs, and a league leading 8 RBIs through the first month of the season. Lyons currently leads the league in RBIs, as well as Slugging Percentage (.818) and OPS (1.485).
In his final month of MABL action before moving off island, original MABL member Paul Skarbo of the Makena Royals has been putting together a memorable farewell tour. In his 19th season, Paul is hitting .429 (3 for 7) with 5 runs scored and 6 walks, while leading the league with a .692 on-base percentage.
The Kihei Centipedes’ Ryan Swindle has been getting it done at the plate and on the mound for the defending champions. Through the first 3 weeks Swindle is batting .375 (3 for 8) with a .615/.750/1.365 on-base/slugging/OPS line, including a home run in the ‘Pedes victory against the Pirates on August 12. The right-hander is also leading the league with a 1.00 ERA and 1.00 WHIP through 9.0 innings this season.
Kory Takamura is off to a hot start for the Central Rays, winning both of his starts during the month of August including a 11 strike out complete game performance against the Pirates on August 19. Takamura is leading the league in wins (2), complete games (1), and strike outs (18) through 14.2 innings so far this season.
