Vote for Player of the Month

The first month of Spring 2021 MABL action concluded with the La Perouse Pirates sprinting to a 3-0 record and an impressive +44 run differential. Though last season’s champs, the Makena Royals, are hot on the trail after last week’s 12-2 victory. The race is gonna be hot with six teams notching a victory through the first three games!

The January 2021 Player of the Month candidates listed below were selected based on their performances during the month of January, with no more than one candidate per team. Voting is open to players, fans, and family, and is limited to 1 vote per individual. This month’s award is brought to you by Savor Maui (savormaui.com, @savormaui). New team, same offensive production for Anthony Benigno, the #2 all-time MABL leader in batting average coming into the season. In three games, the Upcountry Dirtbags’ P/1B went 6 for 10 with 2 doubles and 8 total bases to go along with 1 SB. His pitching (2 W, 9 IP, 1 ER, 0.161 OBA) and hitting performances signal the Dirtbags are another strong contender for a Finals appearance.

The West Maui Brewers have ridden to an early 2-1 start through tremendous performances on the mound from the veteran righty Andy Michaels. The all-time MABL leader in innings and strikeouts added another 19 IPs in three games (2 W, 10 Ks, 0.250 OBA) thus far. He went the distance for the season’s only CG in Week 2 to earn the victory against the defending champs.

In a season that has seen 4 HR through the first 3 games, the Royals’ SS Gered Mochizuki started the champs’ title defense with a 1st inning bomb into the tennis courts at Kalama Park. He’s second in the league in slugging percentage (1.000) and OPS (1.625).

Among qualifiers, Ikaika Neizman (Pacific Hurricanes) leads the league in batting average (0.857), on-base percentage (0.889), slugging percentage (1.143), and OPS (2.032). On pace to improve on last season’s slash line (0.533/0.588/0.733), he has shined on the mound in his two appearances this season (1 SV, 5 IP, 0 ER, 0.235 OBA) as well.

Leading the way offensively for the Pirates was Elias Steadman (0.500 AVG, 10 RBI, 6 R), who is on pace to shatter the MABL single-season RBI record with 11 games to play. The third baseman has nearly doubled his total from last season in less than 1/4 of the plate appearances. He has a double and a triple among 10 total bases through three games.
