Vote for March POTM

We are now past the halfway point of the Spring 2023 Maui Adult Baseball League season, with 6 weeks remaining in the regular season. The Makena Royals (4-0 in March) and the Lahaina Warriors (winners of 5 of their last 6 games) made big moves this month, while the Kihei Centipedes (7-1 overall) have maintained the top spot in the standings as we head into April.

Some of the league’s top contributors during the month of March are recognized below as MABL Player of the Month nominees. The candidates listed were selected based on their performances up to this point of the season, with no more than one candidate per team. Voting is open to players, fans, and family, and is limited to 1 vote per individual.

Mitchell Crim paced the Royals’ potent offense with a huge month of March. The veteran center fielder went 7 for 15 (.467 batting average) with 2 doubles and his first career home run. Crim scored 7 runs and drove in 6 in 18 plate appearances, posting a 309 OPS+ over that span.

The Nahiku Gorillas picked up their first win in franchise history on March 26, with Stone Hashizaki leading the way on the mound. The first year pitcher has assumed a workhorse role for the Gorillas this season, going 1-1 with a 57 ERA- and 1.41 WHIP over 17.0 IP in March.

Brandon Kagrise of the West Maui Brewers led the league with 8 runs scored during March. Over 18 plate appearances, the reigning MABL Gold Glove Award winner slashed .462/.556/.538, good for a 227 OPS+, while driving in 5, helping the Brew Crew to a 6-2 record entering April.

The Warriors’ John Lamb put together one of the most dominant stretches of pitching performances in MABL history, topping 10 strikeouts in back-to-back-to-back weeks from March 12 through March 26. Over 4 March appearances Lamb went 2-0 with a save, and a 1.07 ERA over 25.2 IP. John’s 41 K’s this month bring his season total to 80, just 13 shy of the MABL single-season record set by teammate Mike Gilligan during the Summer 2021 season. To top it off, John scored 5 runs while putting together a .455/.500/.455 AVG/OBP/SLG line at the plate.

The Upcountry DirtbagsFrank Lettieri was on a tear during the month of March, slashing .643/.706/.857 good for a league best 370 OPS+ over 17 plate appearances. Lettieri’s 3 doubles and 12 total bases in March lead the league, and his 8 RBIs were second most over that span. Even better, the reigning ROY and Batting Champ finally got his own jersey!
