September Player of the Month

Multiple weeks of night games at the Stadium to accommodate previously rained out contests led to a busy month of Maui Adult Baseball League action. Five candidates were selected for the Player of the Month poll on the basis of their performances from the month of September, under the restriction of one candidate per team. Voting is open to players, fans, and family members, and is limited to 1 vote per individual.

The MABL Player of the Month award for September 2018 is presented by Betty’s Beach Cafe, located at 505 Front Street in Lahaina. Austin Beesley helped the La Perouse Pirates to a 5-1 record in the month of September with an impressive offensive onslaught. In six games he hit .476 (10 for 21) with 8 runs scored, and 8 RBIs, as well as a league-leading 6 BBs and 8 stolen bases. Against the Royals on September 9, Beesley turned in the first 6 RBI performance of the season, going went 4 for 4 in the Pirates’ victory.

The Kihei Centipedes’ Randy Button, put together a pair of strong performances against the Dirtbags and Brewers. While throwing a pair of complete games, the reigning MABL Cy Young Award winner was 1-1 with a 2.12 ERA, 0.164 OBA, 0.76 WHIP, and 13 Ks over 17.0 IP. Against the Dirtbags on September 5, Button out-dueled Fausto Allosada, allowing no earned runs on only 3 hits and 2 walks.

The Upcountry Dirtbags’ Baba Cazimero lead all hitters with a .563 batting average (9 for 16) during the month of September, compiling 4 straight multi-hit games. The Dirtbags’ shortstop added 5 runs scored, 3 doubles, 3 RBIs, and 4 stolen bases to go along with a .563/.750/1.313 OBP/SLG/OPS line.

Nelson Okamura lead a Central Rays offense which averaged over 8 runs a game during a 5-1 stretch in September. In 5 games, Okamura hit .533 (8 for 15) with 6 runs scored, 3 RBIs, 4 stolen bases, 4 walks, and a league-leading .632 on-base percentage.

Ty Roberts of the West Maui Brewers dazzled in three September starts. Across 19.0 innings, Ty was good for a 3-0 record and 1.42 ERA while leading the league in wins, opponent batting average (.162), and WHIP (0.68). Against the Hurricanes on September 23, Ty threw a 2 hit shutout, striking out 5 and walking none.
