Playoffs begin May 16

The Maui Adult Baseball League Spring 2021 Playoffs are set to begin Sunday, May 16 at Kalama Park in Kihei. In a race that came down to the final game of the regular season, the Kihei Centipedes (4-10) secured the 6th and final playoff spot with a 10-2 victory over the Pacific Hurricanes on May 2. The Centipedes face the Upcountry Dirtbags (3rd seed, 8-6), who return to the playoffs a season after falling one win short of a MABL Championship. These two teams split their regular season series, but the 6th seed has advanced only once in five seasons since the start of 2018. The first pitch of this single game elimination contest is slated for 10:00am.

After the morning game, the West Maui Brewers (4th seed, 7-7) will host the Central Rays (5th seed, 7-7) at 1:15pm. The Brewers won both regular season matchups against the Rays, and will need to make it three straight to advance to the 2nd round of the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Over the past 5 seasons, the 5th seed has advanced 4 times.

The winners will advance to face the top two seeds in a pair of best-of-three series in the 2nd Round of the MABL Playoffs, beginning on May 23 at Eddie Tam Park in Makawao. The lower seed advancing from Round 1 will face the defending champion Makena Royals (1st seed, 12-2) in the morning game, with the higher seed facing the La Perouse Pirates (2nd seed, 10-4) to follow. Come check out the action in the coming weeks as Maui Adult Baseball League’s top teams leave it all on the field. And be sure to visit the league website after each game for scores, stats, and updated schedules.

As a reminder, full Return to Play guidelines remain in place for MABL activities to ensure compliance with county and national health guidelines for safe activity in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

  1. In regards to Eddie Tam, the bases at first and second are not safe. They’re not permanent. I’ve seen a few bad plays at first and don’t want anyone getting hurt. Just looking out for everyone. Thanks.
