Vote for Player of the Month

With the first month of the Summer 2019 Maui Adult Baseball League season in the books, it’s time for players and fans to decide on the August 2019 Player of the Month. All games this month were held at Maehara Stadium, with teams playing 4 or 5 games each. As we head towards September, the Central Rays and La Perouse Pirates lead the way as the only remaining unbeaten teams.

The candidates for the Player of the Month award were selected based on their performances during the first 4 weeks of the season, with no more than one candidate per team. As always, voting is open to players, fans, and family, and is limited to 1 vote per individual.

The Rays’ Jonah Abreu has paced the league’s top offense while leading the league in hits (9), doubles (4), RBIs (8), total bases (13), batting average (.643), on-base percentage (.722), and slugging percentage (.929) thus far. Abreu contributed a 3 for 3 game on Opening Day against the Hurricanes, driving in 5 runs in the process, as well as a 4 for 4 games against the Royals on Aug 25. The Rays left fielder has an extra-base hit in 4 of 5 games this season.

Shaun Doyle of the Kihei Centipedes got off to a hot start, batting .500 with 6 runs and 5 RBIs through his teams’ first 4 games. Doyle has a .500/.533/.571 AVG/OBP/SLG line with at least one hit in every game this season, and multiple hits the last three weeks.

The Pirates’ reigning Cy Young Award winner, Joseph McFarlin, has led the league’s top pitching staff with victories in starts against the Centipedes and Brewers to start the season. Through 15.0 IP, McFarlin has yet to allow an earned run or to walk a batter, en route to a 2-0 record, 19 strikeouts, a .135 opponents’ batting average, and a league leading 0.47 WHIP. On Aug 11 McFarlin handed the Brewers their first shutout loss in over 2 years, going the distance and scattering only 5 hits while striking out 11.

Tim Page of the Upcountry Dirtbags has made the most of his 3 games so far this season, batting .444 at the plate, with a 3.18 ERA through 11.1 IP on the mound. On Opening Day against the Warriors, Page went 2 for 3 with a double, triple, 2 runs scored and an RBI while allowing only 1 hit and no earned runs in 2 innings of relief.

The Brewers’ Enmanuel Yajure Pena is off to a strong start this season at the plate and on the mound as well. Yajure is batting .467 with 7 hits and 2 doubles through 5 games. Through 13.1 innings pitched, the righty has a 1.35 ERA, 2 saves, and a league-leading 20 strikeouts, including 13 in a complete game tough-luck loss to the Rays on Aug 18.
