Vote for April POTM

As the Spring 2023 Maui Adult Baseball League regular season draws to a close, all 6 playoff spots have been claimed, though the last weekend of games will determine the 1st Round match-ups to take place on Sunday, May 14. The Kihei Centipedes clinched their best record in franchise history and first top seed as well, while the West Maui Brewers clinched their first top two finish since the Summer 2019 regular season. Despite picking up 2 wins in the past 3 weeks, the Kaanapali Coast Monarchs were eliminated from playoff contention last week. And as their inaugural season draws to a close, the Nahiku Gorillas can feel good about the way they played down the stretch, making marked improvements as the season went on.

With plenty of strong performances from players across the league there were many worthy candidates to be recognized as MABL Player of the Month nominees for the month of April. The candidates listed below were selected based on their performances during five weekends of action last month, with no more than one candidate per team. Voting is open to players, fans, and family, and is limited to 1 vote per individual.

The Gorillas’ Damien Awai made a pair of April starts and turned some heads in the process. Under the lights on April 16, Awai struck out 9 over 5.0 IP surrendering only 2 hits and 0 earned runs against the Brewers. In total the big right-hander threw 11.0 innings, striking out 13 and holding opponents to a .154 average and league-leading 0.91 WHIP over that span.

Trevor Caughey of the Upcountry Dirtbags started two games last month, beating teams ahead of the ‘Bags in the standings in both outings. In total Caughey went 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA over 15.0 innings, holding opponents to a .211 batting average and a 1.07 WHIP in April.

The Monarchs’ Brooks Faria hit .529 (9 for 17) during the month of April, second in the league over that span. In 5 games Faria scored 7 runs (1st), picked up 9 hits (2nd), and swiped 6 bases (1st), while posting a 1.179 OPS (3rd best) and helping his squad pick up a pair of wins in the process.

The Brewers’ Andy Michaels threw a whopping 36.2 innings over 5 appearances in April. Over that span Michaels went 3-0 with 3 complete games (including a 10-inning tie) and a 3.23 ERA, holding opponents to a .205 batting average and a 1.20 WHIP.

Roy Smith was an absolute menace in the box for the Lahaina Warriors in April. Roy led the league in hits (10), batting average (.588), and on-base percentage (.632), posting a 1.220 OPS and stealing a base…it may be time for the MABL to start testing for performance enhancing substances.
