As the Summer 2018 Maui Adult Baseball League regular season draws to a close, teams have been jockeying for playoff position. This month’s Player of the Month candidates have made their impact felt down the stretch, with standout performances during October. Voting for this month’s award is open to players, fans, and family members and is limited to 1 vote per individual.
The MABL Player of the Month award for October 2018 is presented by Betty’s Beach Cafe, located at 505 Front Street in Lahaina. The La Perouse Pirates’ Austin Beesley followed up his September Player of the Month performance with another huge month, getting it done at the plate and on the mound. In 3 games, Austin hit .500 (5 for 10) with 2 doubles, 4 walks, 3 runs scored, and 4 stolen bases. On the mound, the right-hander was 2-0 with a league best 1.13 ERA. Beesley held opposing hitters to a .143 batting average, posting a 0.75 WHIP with 9 Ks in 8 innings over 2 appearances.
The Upcountry Dirtbags’ Baba Cazimero stayed red hot at the plate in October, hitting .438 (7 for 16) with 3 runs scored, 3 walks, and 3 stolen bases. Cazimero also made 4 appearances on the mound for the Dirtbags, going 1-0 with a 2.67 ERA, .165 opponent batting average, and 1.35 WHIP, striking out 11 over 10.1 innings.
Shaun Doyle of the Kihei Centipedes put together a historic month, helping the Centipedes clinch a playoff berth by hitting .706 (12 for 17) with a .722 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage over 3 games. Doyle lead the league with 12 hits, 5 doubles, and 10 RBIs over this span.
The Central Rays’ Meade Tabata added to his impressive rookie campaign, hitting .600 (6 for 10) with 4 runs scored and 4 RBIs during three October games. The right-hander also got it done on the mound, going 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA, .211 opponent batting average, 1.10 WHIP, and 8 Ks in 10 innings in his first two starts of the season, helping the Rays clinch a 1st round bye in the playoffs.
Enmanuel Yajure Pena helped the West Maui Brewers clinch their third consecutive 1st round bye. The reigning league MVP topped all batters with a .778 (7 for 9) average, .833 on-base percentage, and whopping 1.333 slugging percentage during October. In three games, Yajure Pena scored 3 runs, drove in 4, and stole 3 bases, to go along with his 2nd home run of the season. On the mound, he was 1-0 with a save, a 3.38 ERA, .200 opponent batting average, 1.25 WHIP, and a league-leading 21 Ks in 16 innings.
