At the halfway point of the Maui Adult Baseball League’s Summer 2020 regular season, only 4 games separate the first place and last place teams. The Makena Royals lead the way at 6-1, with the La Perouse Pirates and Central Rays close behind (5-2 each).
The August 2020 Player of the Month candidates listed below were selected based on their performances during the month of August, with no more than one candidate per team. Voting is open to players, fans, and family, and is limited to 1 vote per individual.
Jerry Ayala has been a workhorse for the La Perouse Pirates so far this season, making 5 appearances in August totaling 26.0 innings of work. Ayala held opponents to a .188 batting average while posting a 2.08 ERA and 1.15 WHIP over that span, logging wins against the Brewers and Rays, and striking out 11 in a no decision against the Centipedes.
Engaged in the dramatic chase to 300 career hits, the Lahaina Warriors’ Anthony Benigno has been on an absolute tear at the plate. During the month of August, Benigno lead the league in batting average (.643), on-base percentage (.688), and slugging (.786) after posting 9 hits, including 2 for extra bases. The Warriors’ first baseman added 4 runs scored, and 3 RBIs while swiping a pair of bases over 4 games.
Brandon Gonsalves of the Makena Royals was a force on the mound during the month of August. The right-hander lead the league’s top pitching staff with a 1.80 ERA, .189 opponents batting average, and 0.90 WHIP over 10.0 innings. Gonsalves picked up wins against the Hurricanes and Warriors, and has only walked 2 batters across 16.0 innings so far this season.
The Upcountry Dirtbags’ Tommy Hauptman leads the way in a number of major offensive categories halfway through the season, putting together a tremendous month of August along the way. The Dirtbags’ center fielder batted .600 (9 for 15) over 5 games, with a .667 on-base percentage, 2 stolen bases, and a league leading 6 RBIs. Hauptman has now hit safely in 10 straight games, dating back to February 23 of last season.
Bryant Sparkman of the Central Rays got it done on the mound as well as at the plate in August. The 2-time MABL MVP led the league with a 1.48 ERA during August, going 2-0 with a save, holding opponents to a .216 batting average and a 1.12 WHIP, and striking out 14 over 18.2 innings of work. At the plate Sparkman collected 9 hits, good for a .563/.600/.625 AVG/OBP/SLG line over 5 games.
