Pirates and Dirtbags win in the opening round of playoffs

Posted on May 23rd, 2013 by Paul Skarbo

The La Perouse Pirates and the Upcountry Dirtbags took the first game of the 3 game series on Sunday.  The Pirates won over the West Maui Brewers 4-1 behind the complete game 3 hit, 1 run pitching performance by Jay Rigsby and were led on offense by Jose Velasco who has a banner day at the plate with a 3-3 performance including a triple, 2 RBIs and a run scored.  The Brewers Oscar Duran also pitched a complete game and reached base twice with a hit and a walk.  John Hamilton was 1-3 and knocked in their only run of the game.  The series moves to Kihei this Sunday with the Brewers needing to win both games of the potential double header to move to the championship round.

The Upcountry Dirtbags won a tight 3-2 game over the Central Rays.  Both teams score twice in the 5th inning with the only other run coming in the second inning.  Dirtbag Ryan Silva jump started the offense with a big 3-3 day including 2 doubles that led to 2 runs.  Fausto Allosada pitched the complete game and went 1-2 at the plate with a walk.  After scoring 2 runs in the 5th inning, Allosada did not allow a base runner the final 4 innings.  The Rays rookie Bryant Sparkman pitched a complete game with 9 strike outs in the loss.  The Rays were held to 4 hits one each by Jeremy Loque, Garrett Yamada, Fernando Aponte-Torres and Joe Smith.  The Rays look to get the offense going next Sunday in Makawao as they look to win both games of the double header to advance to the next round.
